Long-term care insurance is a vital form of coverage that should not be overlooked. Unfortunately, it often goes unnoticed due to a lack of attention. Statistics show that the likelihood of individuals above 75 reaching a nursing-handicap state is 1 in 3, while those under 60 face a 6% chance. Additionally, around 5,000 Israelis suffer hip fractures each year, which can lead to physical deterioration and functional decline beyond the orthopedic implications.
In 2019, insurance companies ceased selling private long-term care insurance in Israel because sub-insurers (international companies who invest in risk and profits) deemed it unprofitable. The regulator didn't approve an increase in the price of long-term care insurance. As a result, citizens who hadn't yet purchased long-term care insurance were left with only the option of Kupat Cholim coverage.
I strongly recommend that everyone, including their families (including children), secure at least a Kupat Cholim group insurance. Each Kupat Cholim offers insurance through an affiliated company specializing in this area. It's crucial to enroll before the age of 49 to access the maximum insurance coverage available.
Group insurance provides compensation of either 5,000NIS or 10,000NIS for five years, subject to a 60-day waiting period. Insurance extensions can be purchased for an additional fee. The advantage of group insurance is its relatively low cost compared to the coverage it offers. However, it is important to note that the insurance is subject to regulations, and its conditions may change in the future pending regulatory approval, as has occurred previously. Nevertheless, it is still better than having no coverage at all.
How to prevent falls?
Preventing falls requires vigilance and addressing the issue promptly. Alongside maintaining a healthy and safe lifestyle, family members must be involved in ensuring the safety of their loved ones and preventing falls. If a loved one experiences recurrent falls, it is crucial to identify the cause, report it to a doctor (preferably a geriatrician), and seek their intervention.
How do you make your home safer?
Making your home safer during old age should be a priority. Here are some recommendations for different areas of the house:
Living room: Clear furniture from the sides of the room, remove electrical and telephone wires from walkways, ensure adequate lighting, and eliminate carpets.
Shower: Use a shower instead of a bathtub to reduce the risk of falls. Switch to a non-slip liquid soap and install a safety mat on the floor. Consider using accessories to enhance safety in the bathroom. Remove the key from the bathroom and toilet doors.
Kitchen: Avoid using stools or chairs to reach high cabinets. Place a rug under the sink to prevent moisture on the floor, ensuring it is securely attached to avoid slipping or tripping hazards.
Stairs (indoors and outdoors): Install safety railings and adequate lighting in the stairwell. Remove flower pots and decorative items from the stairs for safety reasons.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of falls:
Engage in regular and safe physical activity to strengthen muscles, improve stability, and reduce falls.
Maintain a balanced diet, avoid skipping meals, and drink plenty of fluids.
Be mindful of the medications you take and ensure they are properly balanced.
Undergo regular vision and hearing examinations to preserve these abilities, and use appropriate glasses and hearing aids when needed.
Use walking aids when necessary.
Consult an occupational therapist for assistive devices if there are difficulties with daily functioning.
Consider using an emergency button and wearing an emergency watch to call for help from anywhere in the apartment when needed.
Create a list of important phone numbers and keep it near the phone.
In the event of a fall, refrain from rushing to help the person up. Instead, ensure they are not injured and consult a medical professional if necessary.
